Adventures in Hyperdocs
What in the world is a hyperdoc?
I thought that must be when I use google docs. Well, I didn’t know. But it turns out I kinda did. In a small way. From what I have gathered a hyperdoc is a complete interactive lesson designed to create a blended learning experience. So, take good pedagogical content knowledge and technology (TPACK) and deliver a lesson or course that inspires and motivates students to be actively engaged in their learning.
Whoa! Really? Yep.
My initial foray
During Covid my team created lessons using Seesaw. We didn’t know it at the time but we were plunged into using web 2.0 tools. We watched videos on YouTube, Zoomed and came up with some lessons that students were completely engaged with. We made lessons that offered choice, links to videos for further explanation, and multimodal tools for showing their understanding.
But wait that isn’t all.
I told you I could put a link in text or email to my mom, right? Not just her, but you get the idea. Recently I have learned about Padlet, Wakelet, Quizlet and Google Docs (maybe a few more). I knew a little bit about Kahoot but not more than a little bit. My brain is thinking of all the different ways I can use this to help my students learn and create understanding. I teach first grade and wonder how long it will take for them to pick up on the technology. As I say that out loud, I know it will vary somewhat. But I know some of them will pick it up and run with it because this is the way they know.
Benefit for me
Students will turn in their work and there it will be. No dogs eating the work. No water spilled and messing up the papers. No glue blobs making it impossible to separate papers. We will still cut and glue and have hands on activities because kinesthetically that is important and fun. I will also know that I am better preparing my students for the future.
Whitney sang it best when she sang, “I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.”
